Something occurred to me as I sat at my kitchen table earlier this evening, watching endless commercials while I waited for my show to come back on.  And there was a commercial for a toilet cleaner, and the ‘hook’ line was “What can clean your toilet 3600 times a year?”  And that made me think, “Wow, we flush our toilets a lot in a year.  That’s a lot of water.”

And then it hit me.  That’s a lot of water. That’s a lot of water that we just pee
in.  How my mind made the next jump, I don’t really know, but it my next thought was, “There are kids all around the world that go without water.  And we just pee in ours like it’s nothing.”

So, like I always do when I’m curious about a topic (and this had definitely sparked my curiosity), I went to learn about it.  I Googled ‘how can i help provide clean water’ and Google filled in the ‘for developing countries’ for me.

I don’t know how I had gone so long without knowing this.  Did you know that there are so many developing countries that don’t have access to clean water?  Countless people don’t have access to safe drinking water around the globe, especially in developing countries.  According to UNICEF, approximately 3,000 children die a day from diarrheal diseases that come from drinking unsafe and contaminated water.   Only behind pneumonia, diarrhea is responsible for 18% of the deaths of children in low-income countries (x).

That’s a lot of children, all because they don’t have access to clean drinking water.  Water that we take advantage of and flush down the toilet 3,600 times.

Did you know, that in villages that have a clean-water well, the girls are able to go to school because they don’t have to walk all day to get water?  And that men are able to work in the fields because they are healthy and no sick from water-related diseases?  That their crops are able to grow better, and by extension, improve the quality of life? (x)  According to UNICEF, just washing a child’s face with clean water helps get rid of other diseases that they could be subject to.

All that can be changed with clean water.  And this isn’t just to send you on a guilt trip because you drank that Pepsi or Coke too fast and had to use the restroom.  You can help.  There are organizations that you can donate to, like UNICEF or The Water Project, and I’m sure there are countless others.  Research, find organizations where you know your money will go where you want it.  And if you don’t know how to get started, you could do what I did, Google ‘how can i help provide clean water to developing countries?’

Yeah this has nothing to do with Harry Potter, Josh Hutcherson, or The Hunger Games, but just stop and read it.
